Ecuador is a relatively
unexplored country located in northwestern South America between the
Pacific Ocean and the Amazon jungle. Ecuador was named after its
position on the Equator and is bordered by Colombia, Peru and the
Pacific Ocean. Few countries as small as Ecuador have such diverse
geography and climate. The country has the tallest active volcano in the
world, great beaches, tropical rainforest, and deep valleys, colourful
Indian Markets and of course the enchanting Galapagos Islands. Ecuador
is also rich in culture and architecture due to its Spanish and Inca
heritage, vast indigenous population and broad ethnic diversity. The
country of Ecuador is well known for its social and political stability
Quito is the capital of
Ecuador and thus offers the best travel connections to anywhere within
the country. A half-hour flight to the East will take you to the Amazon
Basin. A two-and-a-half hour flight will take you to the Galapagos
Islands, the site of Darwin's inspiration. Less than two hours to the
north is Otavalo, South America's largest and most famous Indian market.
Follow the Pan American Highway to the south, the former Royal Road of
the Incas, and you will come to Cotopaxi National Park, site of the
world's highest active volcano.
Located in a beautiful
valley and surrounded by snow capped peaks of the Andes, the Franciscan
city of Quito is surprisingly friendly and considerably safer than
other large Latin American cities. Furthermore, the city has kept its
colonial charm in spite of growing to the size of 1 million. The
temperature is determined by the altitude and averages 60-75 during the
day and 50 at the night.

Families belong to Ecuadors middle class, although students should
take note that living standards in Ecuadora are lower than Europe
or North America. Family homes are located in neighbourhoods usually nor
more than a 10 to 20 minute walk to school. Participants choosing to
stay with a family should recognize that a certain degree of flexibility
will be required to adjust to the Bolivian customs and way of life.
Overall, the homestay should be one of the highlights of your trip but
sometimes problems do arise. Notify the director of the school of any
problems or if you wish to change families (there is no charge for
this).
You will receive a key to the outside door and will be able to come and
go as you please. You are not obligated to eat your meals with the
family, but you should notify them when you will not be eating at home.
Food and drink served by your host family is safe.
Groups of
families staying together: A few
homestays can accommodate this.

"It was truly a magnificent experience we had. I have already been
telling faculty and students what a wonderful place Quito is. I know I
have told you several times already but I really love Quito, I fell in
love with the people, the diversity, the prices, and our very special
host."

No podia creer

my pleasant stay at your school. My special thank you to Diego who made
me feel "at home" from the very beginning. Last but not least my very
special thank you to Patty, Jenny and Johanna for their patience
enduring the many hours of my limited ability to learn and retain the
material from their excellent presentations. I thank you, I thank you
all very much"

"The trip was amazing. the school was professional, welcoming,
courteous. The teachers were nice. Everyone treated us like family and
were willing to help us in any way possible. Diego was awesome, his door
was always open for us to come in with questions or problems. The first
weekend in Otavalo and the volcanoes was the best. The clouded forest
was also great but we were a little rushed in it. I would make it a four
day trip. Visiting the school of medicine was good too. the families we
stayed with were also great. The group was amazing. We all got along
extremely well and shared a lot and had fun together. All in all the
trip was wonderful. thanks."
