Academic Credits in Cusco, Peru

Location

Perú borders with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and the Pacific Ocean. The country has three distinct regions, a narrow coastal belt (along the Pacific Ocean), the wide Andean mountains and the Amazon rainforest.

Although the coastal belt is a desert, that is where most of the population lives. Perú is renowned as the land of the Incas, but many great pre-Columbian civilizations flourished.

Visitors can see the ancient ruins of the Inca capital of Cusco, explore the lost city of Machu Picchu as well as ruins from a variety of other cultures including the Nazca and the Moche.

School

The school is conveniently located next to the main post-office, Internet cafes, banks, money exchanges, etc. It is about four blocks from the main square, the Plaza de Armas, the central meeting area of Cusco (a great place to people watch!). There are many restaurants, cafes, cathedrals and museums nearby. Classes are held in rooms decorated with typical Peruvian "artesania."

Facilities: The Academia Latinoamericana occupies a beautiful and historical colonial home from 19th century on one of the many small plazas, called Limacpampa Grande 565, right behind of the most important site from pre-Colombian Cusco, the Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun).
The building houses two full floors with about 17 classrooms, an indoor patio, a video room, auditorium, an entertainment room, wireless access to internet for our students and interior plaza.

Families belong to Peru's middle class, although students should take note that living standards in Peru are much lower than Europe or North America. Family homes are located in neighbourhoods usually nor more than a 10 to 20 minute walk to school. Participants choosing to stay with a family should recognize that a certain degree of flexibility will be required to adjust to the Peruvian customs and way of life.
Overall, the homestay should be one of the highlights of your trip but sometimes problems do arise. Notify the director of the school of any problems or if you wish to change families (there is no charge for this).
You will receive a key to the outside door and will be able to come and go as you please. You are not obligated to eat your meals with the family, but you should notify them when you will not be eating at home. Food and drink served by your host family is safe.

Groups of families staying together: A few homestays can accommodate this.
