a stunning town, situated right in the heart of the Andean lake
district of Patagonia. It has a huge variety to offer all year round
from
wonderful hiking in summer and autumn to fantastic skiing in the
winter. It is also great place to find some nightlife or just relaxing
in a cafe sampling delicious chocolate and cakes fro which it is
famous for..
The
cocals are
friendly, and very supportive of Intrenational students. We recommend homestays with a local host family if
you wish to really improve your Spanish.
From
the first minute you arrive, you can appreciate
the amazing mountain backdrop of what is the holiday and outdoor capital of
Patagonia. Bariloche, (its full name is San Carlos
de Bariloche) lies along the southeastern shores of spectacular Lago Nahuel Huapi. It
raises up the the slopes of Cerro Otto,
behind which rear the spiky crests of the Cerro Catedral massif. Everything
in Bariloche faces the picture perfect lake. This is an
impressive expanse of water that enraptures you with its beauty.
The town's life-blood is tourism.
Over 700,000
visitors arrive annually, mening that there is always something
to do in Bariloche. The area's main attraction is the Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi that surrounds town.
However, in
although in winter, its the attraction of the ski resort of Cerro Catedral, one of the continent's most important,
that beomces the centre of attraction.
For
five days in August, Bariloche celebrates the Fiesta Nacional de
la Nieve, with ski races, parades and a torchlit evening descent
on skis to open the season officially, as well as the election
of the Reina Nacional de la Nieve, or Snow Queen.
Bariloche
